Winter weddings in Wisconsin can be cold and snowy but not Rachel & Matt’s. Their December wedding day was crisp and cool – perfect for smoking cigars – and with a clear light that highlighted Rachel’s gorgeous cheekbones. Without snow or cold winds the day required that she wear just a wisp of a shawl to warm her shoulders and the sun seemed to set for hours. I met Rachel at her parent’s home where her mom, in a stunning navy fascinator, helped her stay calm and her girls finessed the tiny buttons on the neck of the bridal gown. Sheathed in lace Rachel met Matt at the light drenched altar of St. Mary’s and they said their vows, both just a little glassy eyed. Then they joined hands and ushered their friends to Milwaukee’s lakefront and a favorite tavern; they cozied up under Christmas lights and explored the Harley Davidson Museum with their guests. I always get to know my couples before the big day but it is during the toasts where I think a little window into their real lives opens up for me. What I will remember of Rachel & Matt’s toasts is that their dads both cried and their best man and maid of honor talked about loyalty, friendship, and time well spent in the company of one another. The guests cheered for them – loudly and with gusto – and so I joined them: Cheers to Matt & Rachel.
