Erika & Dave are part of a large and amazing friend group that I keep getting lucky enough to photograph. The connection is often St. Jude’s in Wauwatosa, but sometimes it is soccer or medical school or small Catholic high schools in Wisconsin, or perhaps just being awesome. Erika is full of laughter and Dave’s wry humor gets her every time and they are indeed awesome. I knew that from the first time I met them and cemented the impression when I met them in their adopted hometown of Seattle for a drink a few weeks after the wedding. I learned a few other things about them on their wedding day: Erika can get Dave to do most anything – including dip his toes in freezing cold Lake Michigan. On their wedding day she was already in up to her knees before he gave in and took off his dress shoes and socks, rolled up the tux pant legs and joined her, but join her he did. In fact, that is kind of their story. One leads and the other joins, taking turns doing the leading, the other joyfully joining. Dave’s best man’s toast detailed his past in the military and his love story with Erika, writing home to her and visiting her when on leave – even before they were technically dating. Metaphorically speaking, one could say that Dave jumped in up to his knees before Erika joined him and realized that this guy is the one, but join him she did.
I’m not sure who’s idea it was, but they’ve made some other big leaps together, too. They moved to Seattle a couple of years ago – Erika to advance in her medical career and Dave to work as a lawyer. They travel and explore and make the most of their fleeting moments together between work and rounds. But no matter how busy or stressed they get they always join one another, eventually, and whole heartedly.
