Margaret & Andrew’s preppy chic wedding was held at one of my all-time favorite venues: The Milwaukee Art Museum. With its soaring Santiago Calatrava designed brise soleil and sleek white ribs, it is a photographer’s play land. The light that streams in through the watery turquoise windows is heavenly and modern, crisp and yet somehow soft. Big voids are capped by Calder mobiles or end their vistas with shapes suggesting their is much more to see just beyond. Overhangs and wings enclose the spaces and yet somehow free them from enclosure. And in the middle of it all, Margaret & Andrew tied their lives to each other.
Margaret & Andrew met each other early in the day, under the big Calder mobile while the Museum was still open, so grandmothers and kids on field trips watched in awe as Margaret spiraled down the wide marble steps to meet him in a quiet, private cyclindar, seemingly meant for first looks. Their wedding party of two strolled with them on Wisconsin Ave and they enjoyed the perfect sunshine and sweetness of the day. After meeting again to say I Do, they celebrated on the veranda, sipped from stripey straws, enjoyed a custard sundae bar and danced the night away. They invited their guests to enjoy the current exhibit – Posters of Paris – and most obliged, wandering happily among the huge lithographs talking with friends. I asked Margaret & Andrew about their inspiration for their preppy aesthetic and Andrew impressed me as much as Margaret when he replied we were intent on letting the building itself be the star. Well, the other star besides Margaret…Simple, clean and contemporary. Perfectly said.
