This past spring I met Julissa & Ayodeji at her parent’s property for their wine-country evoking engagement session so I had a tiny clue as to how beautiful their wedding day, to be held on the same piece of land, promised to be. Still, on the first weekend of June I was surprised at how lovely the wild grasses looked, how romantic the tent seemed and how stunningly beautiful both bride & groom were. Julissa dressed downstairs and Ayodeji up, a little knot of excited, wonderful tension filling the space between the floors until the moment they first saw one another. Julissa’s Allure gown hung and clung perfectly while Ayodeji could only be described as incredibly handsome and also sweetly nervous. He walked alone down a dirt lane and turned slowly to await her approach; she walked to him, acutely aware of how grateful and happy and amazed she felt. Together they laughed, cried, danced, sparklered, and carried one another through the day – surrounded by their most loved ones and bittersweetly remembering those that were there only in spirit. Ayodeji’s mom recently passed away and while much of the wedding planning was specifically about fun – a caricature artist, bean bag toss and yard games, a great dance party, delectable treats and more – the sweet spirit of Ayodeji’s mom was constantly remembered, commemorated and celebrated. A cultural mish mash of wonderful traditions marked the evening as Nigerian aunties and uncles invited latino grandparents to help shower the couple with dollars for good luck. Salsa and cumbia steps flowed on the dance floor and everyone – seriously, everyone – smiled the whole night through – a deserving tribute to an oh-so-in-love couple.
