After more than a decade of photographing weddings I can sometimes get a little hubristic and think I’ve shot every kind of wedding. But then a delightful couple like Anna & Mark come along and turn that thought on its head and friends, I am so grateful for that fact. After planning for a courthouse wedding that Covid made nearly impossible to mail down, Anna & Mark were married in the living room of an East Side historic home surrounded by joyful friends and family, and not a few bottles of Spotted Cow. They always envisioned securing a place big enough to host their immediate family and besties for a weekend and they found just the rambling old gem of a home to do that in. After family personalized it with family photos and mementos and Anna’s mom deployed her florals skills to decorate, the house became the perfect substitute for a judge’s chambers. They dressed on different floors, surrounded by their people, and they first saw each other on the home’s formal staircase. It’s true that I pretty much love every wedding I photograph but there were just so many sweet things about this one that I think it’s magic will stick with me a little longer than expected. From Anna’s vintage shoes – the same ones her mother wore at her wedding to Anna’s dad 4 decades prior – to the silly and awesome “Marks’ head” tattoos that everyone sported, from the golden hour walk through Lake Park to the delicious spread from Cafe India: every part of the day was included for its capacity to tether them to their families, spark joy, and create memories. Sounds like as perfect way to get married, right?
