Fusion weddings are easy to love. They tend towards the eclectic and colorful and they are vibrant and fun. They are just familiar enough to make all the differences stand out and from our perspective they are, if nothing else, simply interesting to the artistic eye. But make the protagonists of the fusion wedding two insanely lovely humans like Drew and Sid and I present to you: a photographer’s favorite kind of wedding. The kind of wedding that honors culture and religion. The kind where everything on offer has been a choice, a decision, something that that has been “opted-in.” The kind of wedding that celebrates the bride and the groom’s individuality and their respective histories as children, as siblings, as friends, as scholars – and then that magical time in their lives where those histories entwined to create a new story about Them. Drew & Sid had that kind of wedding and their Mehendi night was the perfect entree into their dream weekend of love, faith, hope, friendship and oh yes, fun. With friends and family in town from across the country and around the world Drew and Sid kicked off the celebration at Milwaukee’s iconic Villa Terrace. As the sun set over Lake Michigan they dined and danced, caught up with old friends and blended their families. Henna was applied and toasts were offered, there were some language lessons and oh-so-much laughter. And unbelievably it was just the beginning. In a multi-part series I’ll detail all the amazingness that was Drew & Sid’s wedding.
This is Part I: The Mehendi.
