Adam & AJ are individually extremely cool people. As in Covid-19 front line worker and 40 Under 40 cool, as in comic book engagement proposal and rescue dog cool, as in our-wedding-as-we-imagined-it-can’t-happen-right-now so let’s pivot-and-do-this-thing-with-a-pop-up-wedding-and-our-family cool. They are New York Times wedding announcement cool. {Not a metaphor: See it here.} I know they would never describe themselves this way, and yet their modesty just adds to the cool column tally I keep referencing. And in this wild year of moving parts, plans deferred and gatherings banned, it is events like their delightfully simple, joyfully intimate, and totally eclectic wedding ceremony at the Port of Milwaukee that is keeping us all going here in wedding world. With their casual and modern planning approach paired with their own posh & curated style the focus of the day was very much on family, and specifically on the two of them joining the ones they were born into with the ones they choose for life. As AJ’s sister tearfully reminded us in her ceremony reading of Justice Kennedy’s 2015 opinion recognizing same-sex marriage, Adam & AJ’s union speaks to us of the profundity of marriage as ” it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family.” That is a lot to live up to, I know, but I also know Adam & AJ are up to the challenge, together, as a family.
