Oh darling Alice. Her cashmere hair and plump cheeks, her dedicated pursuit of sucking on fingers and cheeks and chins, her impossibly tiny toes and button nose: she is what we think of when we think of baby. In other words, she is perfect in every way. And on the day I met her she wanted only mama’s arms, daddy’s cuddles, and brother Ian’s sweet head rubs. In her delicately decorated room with the birds on the walls and wrapped in the handmade-by-grandma blanket, we did all her favorite things: She snuggled and was held close, she was fed and reassured, she was made to feel at home. And that Home promises to be a lovely one for her. I loved meeting Alice’s fun big brother who loves his little preschool and her parents who have achieved so much, traveled so far and dreamed so much about the Family she just made whole.
